The smaXtec bolus continuously measures internal body temperature, water intake & drinking cycles, rumination, and activity within the reticulum. The optional pH bolus measures pH in addition to the other parameters. This precise data provides important insights into health, reproduction, feeding, and management.

Many common diseases in dairy cows are characterised by small changes in internal body temperature, long before clinical symptoms appear. smaXtec is the only system that continuously measures internal body temperature directly in the reticulum, with a relative measurement accuracy of ±0.01°C. With these insights, you can respond as early as possible, and reduce severe disease progression, antibiotic use, and associated performance losses.

Yes, smaXtec can be used on pasture-based farms. The boluses collect data directly inside the cow and can store it for up to 6 days if cows are outside of the base station’s readout range. As soon as the animals are back within range, the system automatically transmits the stored data.

The bolus data is read out and transmitted to the smaXtec Cloud via a smaXtec Base Station. A solar-powered base station can be used in pastures to transmit data. Depending on the size, layout, and distance between pastures, additional base stations and antennas may be useful.

smaXtec highlights key changes in internal body temperature, water intake & drinking cycles, rumination, and activity. Reviewing the identified changes alongside farm records and recent events, like vaccinations or group moves, can help identify why a change occurred. smaXtec recognises heat-related changes using activity and rumination measurements together with artificial intelligence to detect heats and provide an insemination window for sexed and conventional semen. The system monitors each cow throughout the reproductive cycle, from heat and unusual cycles to calving and the start of lactation. For calving management, smaXtec detects the typical drop in internal body temperature before calving and informs you approximately 15 hours in advance. This gives you time to prepare and provide support if needed.

The smaXtec Feeding Tool shows how cows and feeding groups respond to feeding strategies. Changes in rumination become visible at the individual cow and group levels. For example, smaXtec can highlight how ration changes or feed quality affect your cows. The optional smaXtec pH bolus measures pH directly in the reticulum and provides the basis for assessing the impact of your ration. Not every cow needs to have a pH bolus. We recommend using the pH bolus in 6 to 10% of the herd or feeding group. This helps you see how the herd or group is responding to your feeding strategy. If you already use smaXtec, you can easily add the smaXtec pH bolus.

smaXtec can connect with the most common herd management and automatic milking systems.
