As soon as an animal drinks, this temperature profile changes in a characteristic way: the temperature drops due to the cooler water and then rises back to its initial level. From these patterns, drinking cycles can be identified, and the total volume of water consumed is calculated from the data over time. The most relevant factors are:

If drinking behaviour becomes abnormal, it's worth investigating potential causes in the cowshed. Often, these are details that are easily overlooked in the daily routine:

  • Dirty or hard-to-reach troughs
  • Troughs that are too low, too high, or poorly positioned
  • Not enough space or competition at the trough
  • Stray voltage
  • Heat stress and inadequate cooling
  • Changes in the ration or feed intake
  • The onset of health problems in individual animals

This is precisely where monitoring water intake becomes valuable for herd management: it doesn't just show that something has changed; it also gives clues as to what the cause might be.

Practical tips: How to increase water intake

Our practical experience shows that small adjustments can often have a significant impact:

  • Unsure if more troughs are needed? You can easily test the demand by installing a temporary trough. This allows you to see quickly, and without a large investment, whether the cows use the additional supply and if their water intake increases.
  • The details matter: Ensure troughs are not placed in dead-end alleys. A mounting height of 60–80 cm from the floor and a water depth of 8–10 cm have proven effective in practice and encourage acceptance.
